This helps the student gain more information about both the pictures and the labels. The memory load is appropriate. There isn’t too much information on the page. 4. Interactivity Issues The navigation bar at the left or the hyperlinks on the stone make it easy to access the information you desire. When you click on a link from this page it takes you to a title page. This page is attractive, but functionally useless. An extra click is required to access the information. Directions are not stated. However, they not needed because the simple page design makes the next step intuitive. 5. Overall Look And Feel The background is black which creates an air of intrigue and mystery appropriate for a museum webpage. The “Rosetta Stone” navigation pallet stands out clearly on the black background. There is unity with the page elements. There is also consistency- the main page is always marked by the graphic of the Nile River. The page is balanced with elements on the left and on the right. 7. Message The message is broken into small units of text. The text is enhanced by attractive pictures. The students can click on underlined vocabulary words to see the definition. The text is not written in the 1 st person. The style is informal and is similar to an oral discussion of mummification. The reading level is appropriate for 6 th grade Authors are from the British Museum which gives the site credibility. 8. Interactivity Issues The column on the left aids navigation through the site. The navigation tools are consistently found in the left column The Nile icon leads you to the home page from each of the interior pages. Unfortunately they consider home to be the opening title page so it takes an extra click to get to the menu page. The page loads quickly. The headings “story,” “explore,” and “challenge” are used for each topic. This makes it difficult to find an activity. You may remember that you are looking for a challenge activity but you might have to go back to the menu page and look through each topic to find out which challenge it is. Overall Look And Feel The page has a mysterious and intriguing feel with the dark colors and the shadow of the mummy in the side column. \ The highlight on the left side of the text column helps to separate it from the navigation column. There is consistency with fonts and page styles. There is balance between the text and the pictures. The blank space between the navigation and text columns helps define these areas. 10. Reflection I was very impressed with the British Museum’s webpage. It is one of the few websites that I have found that could be used as is in a whole class presentation. The pictures are clear and bright. The text is kept to a minimum but still covers the necessary content. I would suggest that they get rid of the title pages that require an extra click to navigate through. A detailed site map would also be helpful in finding a specific spot within the website. I would like to find more good examples of screen design for websites. Seeing good websites makes these concepts of good screen design more concrete.
