Phoenix Convention Center Phoenix, Arizona Utility-Based Technology Demonstration Programs Track 10Session 8 Phill Consiglio, Senior Manager Federal, Energy Related Services, and K-12 Schools Southern California Edison August 13, 2015

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade What Are “New Technologies” An innovative technology or service that will save our customers money or increase system efficiency New equipment – Lightning – HVAC – Controls – Demand Response – Energy Storage – Smart Grid Components New services – Audits 2

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade How New Technologies Enter the Market Energy Star Incentive adoption at the State Level – Tested and proven effective – The State creates and maintains a State Approved list – Does not always match Energy Star Unproven Technology – Typically a “black box” – Not the best or most reliable method After widespread adoption, devices are codified – Codes and Standards Title 20 (equipment) Title 24 (building) 3

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Why We Do It State and federal mandates for GHG reduction, energy efficiency, demand response, and renewable energy integration Customer expectation for superior reliability and power quality at a reasonable cost Interaction between emerging technologies to help control power delivery in an efficient, real- time, mode Development of smart transmission and substation technology solutions It’s what the customer wants Because it’s cool 4

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade What We’re Up to at Southern California Edison First Fuel Testing Labs – Lighting – HVACR – Food Service Equipment Tehachapi Energy Storage Irvine Smart Grid and Military Microgrids Superconducting Transformer Project 5

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Current Projects Irvine Smart Grid Demonstration – Demonstrate an integrated, scalable, smart Grid with all the interlocking pieces of an end-to-end system from the transmission and distribution systems to consumer applications such as smart appliances and electric vehicles Tehachapi Wind Energy Storage Project – Deploy and evaluate a 32 MWh utility-scale lithium-ion battery technology to improve grid performance and aid the integration of wind generation into the eclectic supply Superconducting Transformer Project – Waukesha Electric Systems project in collaboration with SCE to design and develop a prototype superconducting transformer with fault current limiting capabilities to reduce the cost and size of substation equipment 6

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Tehachapi Wind Energy Storage Project 7

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade In Closing Trust Energy Star and Utility or State Certified Products Be carful if it seems “magical” – Caveat Emptor Questions 8
