2 Background  Was against prayer in public schools and was against the state to require it to be recited in public schools  “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country. Amen.”

3 What did it violate?  Plaintiffs argued it violated the Establishment clause in the 1 st amendment  The 14 th amendment made this applicable to the states

4 Court Ruling  Justice Hugo Black ruled it was unconstitutional to prayer in public schools because it violated the Establishment clause and was considered unconstitutional  Vote was 6-1
