Naming Compounds When naming compounds it is essential that you identify the kind of compound you are naming. Why? Naming rules vary with the type of compound. 2
3
Naming Compounds There are 5 possible choices when naming compounds: Binary Ionic Compound Between a metal and a nonmetal Ends in –ide Ternary Ionic Compound Has at least 3 elements (i.e. contains a polyatomic ion) Usually ends in –ate or -ite 3
4
Naming Compounds Binary Molecular Compound Between a nonmetal and a nonmetal Uses prefixes Ends in –ide Acids Contain hydrogen Hydro---ic means a binary acid -ic means the oxyanion ends in –ate -ous means the oxyanion ends in -ite 4
5
Naming Compounds Bases Contain hydroxide ions – OH - Named like any ternary ionic compound 5
6
Naming Compounds All binary compounds end in –ide. However there are 2 polyatomic that also end in –ide. You need to stay on the lookout for these: OH - hydroxide CN - cyanide 6
7

13
Writing Formulas When writing formulas it is essential that you identify the kind of compound you are naming. Why? Formula rules vary with the type of compound. 13
