3 AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID is a national program and curriculum designed to support students in a challenging college preparatory course of study. Created in 1980 by a single classroom teacher in San Diego, CA.: Mary Catherine Swanson.

5 An AVID/ELD student has: A grade point average of mostly B’s in REGULAR courses Potential to be a successful in their academic courses with AVID SUPPORT (extra time, tutoring and AVID elective) Show the ability or tendency to be SELF-MOTIVATED Have APPROPRIATE classroom behavior

6 Have GOOD attendance Show the desire to WORK HARD and prepare themselves for middle school and then high school graduation Express an INTEREST and WILLINGNESS to learn about college opportunities. An AVID/ELD student should:

7 The AVID/ELD Curriculum The AVID Elective class features: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading, Notetaking, and Study Skills AVID activities include a focus on college, career, citizenship, leadership and motivation Students learn about local colleges and universities throughout the year

9 The AVID/ELD Curriculum The elective class features tutoring twice a week, led by college students and volunteers. AVID/ELD students will focus on reading and writing strategies to improve our scores on the CELDT and CST and core classes. AVID students maintain an AVID binder and take notes in all their subject area classes.

15 Additional Information We will use technology every day to improve our reading and writing. It includes laptops and iPods. There will be several permission slips coming home to allow student to use the equipment and publish on a variety of sites. CEDLT testing will begin at the end of September, more information soon.
