2. Warm Up: Day One  In your sketch / notebook, write “Adding Value” at the top of the page.  Draw a horizontal line in the middle of the page.  Draw a vertical line down the middle of the top box.  Example: Adding Value

3. Warm Up Continued  On the bottom half of your notes page, write the following:  1. Value—The lightness or darkness of a shade.  2. Hatching—  3. Cross-hatching—  4. Stippling—

4. Practice  In your sketchbook, draw a horizon line, vanishing point, and three blocks using ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE.  Label one block “Hatching,” one block “Cross-hatching,” and one block “Stippling.”  Take a wooden block and hold at the angle of one block you have drawn.  Which sides are dark, and which sides are light?

5. Practice  Using the three techniques we have labeled, add VALUE to the cubes you drew.  When you finish, draw more cubes at different angles.  Remember—the closer the marks, the darker the shadows!  Practice, practice, practice!

6. Wrap Up  How do you create lighter shadows?  How do you create darker shadows?  How would you create a shadow that changed from light to dark?

7. Warm Up: Day 2  In the upper left column, write the name “M. C. Escher.”  One of the world’s most famous graphic artists of the _________ century.  Enjoyed using ________________ and __________________ in his work.  Often featured architecture and strange perspective in his work.

11. Today’s Assignment  Today, we are going to practice an M. C. Escher-style graphic design using contour and shading.  On a sheet of white paper, trace your hand.  Using a ruler, draw straight lines every inch, going behind the outline of your hand.  Over your hand, connect the lines with a pronounced curve.

12. Today’s assignment continued…  Using your stippling technique, create a shadow on the left side of your palm and down the left side of your fingers.  Start with a heavy concentration of dots, and gradually decrease as you move away.  Following the curved lines, hatch along the left side of your hand.  Finally, run the marker along the left side of the hand, creating a darker line.

13. Wrap Up  If you finish early, color your hand.  Start dark on the left side of your fingers and palm, and gradually get lighter as you move to the right.  Reflection: What is creating the illusion that your hand is resting on top of the paper?  Reflection: What would happen if you curved down instead of up?

14. Clean Up  Everyone: Make sure your first and last name and block are on the back of your paper.  Supplies: Take up the markers and give them to me. Count to be sure you have markers from everyone at the table!  Keeper: Take up the rulers and set them back on the counter.  Papers: Take up the drawings. I will collect them after everything is put away.

15. Warm Up: Day 3  In the upper right section of your notes, write “Albrecht Durer.”  Write the following statements:  1. Durer was a German artist who lived during the __________ century.  2. He had a huge influence on other artists of his time.  3. He believed that a person needed to study __________________ and ___________________ to become a better artist.

19. Today’s Assignment  Today, we will finish our 3-D hands.  Choose at least three shades of colored pencil.  Color the lines in the background lightly and uniformly.  Use dark and heavy color on the left side of the hand and fingers.  Gradually lighten the color in the middle.  Gradually darken as you get the right side.

20. PRO TIP! 1. Hold the pencil at an angle… not straight up and down. 2. Color with the side of the lead… not the sharpest point… Great student example:

21. Wrap Up  Does your coloring look smooth or streaky?  If it is streaky or choppy, how could it be fixed?  Supplies: Take up pencils and rulers.  Papers: Take up finished drawings.  Everyone: You may take your picture home if you did not finish.  Have a great day!

22. Warm Up: Day 4  1. Have your notebooks and a sharpened pencil at your seat when the bell rings.  2. For today’s warm up, you will complete a handout as a notebook check.  3. As you work, I will walk around and check off that you have your notes in one notebook.  4. If I don’t get to your notebook before the bell rings, leave your notebook with me to check over the weekend.

23. Today’s activities  Today is a catch up day!  If you have not finished an assignment, today is the day to get it done!  If you are completely finished, you can draw, color, or have fun with a “design-a-shoe” hand out.
