2 Saul becomes Israel’s first king.  The Israelites lived in Canaan for 200 years, and their only king was the Lord.  They wanted to live like other nations, and wanted to be a monarchy. A monarchy is a kingdom or empire ruled by one person, either a king or queen.  God told Samuel to anoint Saul as king of Israel.  God spoke to Saul through Samuel. Saul won many battles and the Israelites were happy that he was king.  Eventually Saul stopped listening to Samuel.  God was displeased with Samuel, and would coose another king.
