The introduction Role: who you are e.g. ‘Health Care Consultant to the Scottish Executive’ Remit: what you have been asked to do e.g. “to decide whether or not to continue with the Health Board’s policy of PPP for all new hospital building” Recommendation: “I am firmly of the opinion that the evidence available clearly supports the continuation / ending of this policy”

The Introduction (continued) Reasons: briefly state the main reasons you intend to give for making your recommendation: “As this report will show, there are several compelling reasons for taking this decision. Firstly,……. Secondly….thirdly…. And finally.

The Development This is the main body of your report and must be organised in SECTIONS each section must deal with a REASON as stated in your introduction each section must have: a heading evidence from the sources to back up the reason evidence from your own knowledge to back up the reason

The possible difficulties You will often be expected to identify possible difficulties your decision will give rise to if you have time(!) you may suggested ways to overcome the problems

The Conclusion This is the last thing the examiner reads so it needs to be good! Restate your recommendation restate your reasons include some of the ‘big’ evidence

Background Knowledge This will usually be obvious from the task e.g. PPP, the Elderly, Labour policies etc. some times it’s not so obvious and you have to try to ‘squeeze’ the KNOWLEDGE in somewhere this is where the original aims come in. In almost all DMEs you can refer to the original Aims of the NHS however, this is a last resort -not a first!
