2
My Motivation...
3
Rather than teacher and mentor…
4
How do you weight tests, quizzes, homework, etc.?
5
Assignment-Based Grading Examples Homework/Quizzes: 100 points Midterm: 4 x 100 points Final Exam: 250 points ______________________________ Total: 750 points Four Tests (pick best 3): 20% each Weekly Quizzes: 10% Attendance & Participation: 5% Final Exam (cumulative) : 25% ____________________________ Total : 100%

Sample Assignment-Based Grade Book Student Name Q1Q2…Q12Quiz Avg T1T2T3T4Test Avg Final Exam Final Avg Sem Grade Goodman, Saul Pinkman, Jesse Schrader, Hank White, Skyler White, Walter White, Jr., Walter
7
Questions about assignment scores… I swear I studied really hard for the test, but I totally bombed it. Professor, my quiz scores are low. What should I do?
8
Hard to Discern What Specific Learning Has Occurred

Assessment Scale (in 2 Languages) English, Informal 4.0 = Got it! No ifs, ands, or buts. 3.0 = Close but no cigar. 2.0 = Kind of, Sort of 1.0 = Just getting started 0.0 = No attempt, no show Educationese 4.0 = Proficient 3.0 = Competent 2.0 = Developing or Basic 1.0 = Beginning or Novice 0.0 = No Basis for Assessment
16
A Concept Scoring Example Expand and Simplify: (2x+3y) 2 RESPONSE A: (2x+3y) 2 = (2x) 2 + 2(2x)(3y) + (3y) 2 = 4x 2 + 12xy + 9y 2 RESPONSE B: (2x+3y) 2 = (2x) 2 + (2x)(3y) + (3y) 2 = 4x 2 + 6xy + 9y 2 RESPONSE C: (2x+3y) 2 = (2x+3y) (2x+3y) 4.0 3.0 1.0

Student Earns a Score for Each Concept FIRST QUIZ Concept 1 2.0 Concept 2 3.0 Concept 3 4.0 C1C2C3 Student2.03.04.0 After first quiz:

Student Gets a Score for Each Concept SECOND QUIZ Concept 1 3.0 Concept 2 4.0 Concept 3 4.0 Concept 4 2.0 C1C2C3C4 Student3.04.05.02.0 After second quiz:

Some Observations About the Grade Book ▪ MOST RECENT SCORE ONLY Only the most recent concept score is recorded. ▪ TWO FOURS IN A ROW = KNOW IT Students with two 4s have shown mastery twice. A 5.0 is recorded in the grade book. Students with a 5.0 on a concept can skip this concept on quizzes. ▪ STUDENTS SELF-TRACK Students keep track of all their concept scores on a checklist.

How much do concept scores count?
25
The Goal
26
Well, what happened?
27
Students and I get…
28
I get data 3.85 Solving Linear Equations 3.85 Basic Mult Facts 3.73 Signed Number Arithmetic 3.58 Evaluating Expressions and Formulas 3.55 Equivalent Fractions 3.52 Prime Factorization 3.39 Identify Prime Numbers 3.39 Order of Operations 3.27 Simplifying Expressions 2.91 Combine Like Terms 2.76 Add Signed Fractions 2.55 Multiply/Divide Fractions Prealgebra Class Averages by Concept
29
Students really, I mean really, use...
30
Students act differently…
31
“Only copied down 1 example, will look at this section over weekend, only know some steps”
32
“NEED TO PRACTICE!”
33
“I will study harder next time!” X 2
