1 Bell Work Directions: During the first 10 minutes of class time, work with your table to define the following words on the notes packet on the back table. You can use a dictionary, your cellphones, tablets, or laptops to look up the definitions 1)Renaissance 2)Humanism 3)Individualism 4)Secularism 5)Nation-State 6)Mercantilism 7)Capitalism

2 Objectives  I will be able to define Renaissance vocabulary  I will be able to identify the phases of the Renaissance

3 The Renaissance  “ Renaissance ” means rebirth  The Renaissance began a period of renewed interest and engagement with “ classical ” (Ancient Greece and Rome) learning, culture, literature, art, style, etc.

4 Major Themes of the Renaissance  Humanism (both secular and religious) - Human potential, human progress, expansion of human knowledge  Individualism -focus on the unique qualities and abilities of the individual person  Secularism -greater emphasis on non- religious values and concerns

5 Nation-State  Read “Section 2: Economic and Political Change in Europe”  Nation State  A nation = a socio-cultural entity, a union of people sharing a cultural and linguistic identity.  A state = a legal or political entity that is comprised of the following: a) a permanent population; b) a defined territory; c) a government ; and d) the capacity to enter into relations with other states.

6 Major Historical Events of the Renaissance Period  Age of Exploration (Period of European Expansion)  Protestant Reformation and the Religious Wars  Scientific Revolution- Rise of Modern Science  The Rise of the Modern Nation-State

7 The Economy  Read “Section 6 Transformation of European Economics”  Mercantilism = an economic system developed to unify and increase the power and monetary wealth of a nation through strict governmental regulation of the entire national economy usually through policies designed to secure an accumulation of bullion, a favorable balance of trade, the development of agriculture and manufactures, and the establishment of foreign trading monopolies  Capitalism = an economic system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state, based on a “ free market ”.
