3 About LA CAUSA  What we do: Engage disenfranchised young people in East Los Angeles and foster a commitment to personal development and community transformation.  How we do it: ○ Create a supportive environment where members participate in educational, vocational and leadership development ○ Align our curriculum and learning outcomes to prepare students for both continued education and the workforce PSE and Construction

4 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment  Post Secondary Education (PSE)  Construction Component  Exposure to careers in math and science

5 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment: PSE  Integrate college and career readiness into our curriculum  Three-prong strategy  First, track and expose students into PSE by immersing them into PSE related programming “College Readiness Course” throughout academic year ○ Incorporate career planning, professional development, other relevant skills into the academic curriculum Prepare students for the expectations of PSE institutions and employers Collaborate with PSE partners UCLA Green SITE

6 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment: PSE cont.  Second Strategy:  Promote and teach “transferrable skills” All instructors emphasize critical thinking skill development and post- secondary education relevancy ○ Senior Portfolio Interviews These skills, required for PSE success, are reinforced throughout all classes

7 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment: PSE cont.  Third Strategy:  Promote cumulative projects that integrate civic engagement, service and leadership, with the use of social media, in the community College Readiness Day, FAFSA Week Increasing the number of students who receive PSE exposure, along with already existing practices, will better prepare students for post- secondary pursuits and success

8 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment: Construction Component  Integrated construction and academic curriculum Students learn about union and labor history, social and environmental impact Resume writing, interviewing, CPR and other relevant skills incorporated into training Students receive MC3 (multi-craft core curriculum) certificate after completion of hours ○ More competitive job applicants

9 Best Practices: Integration & Alignment: Careers in STEM  Field trips through the Edison Grant helped expose students to careers in math and science Creating interest in STEM fields  Science and Ecology Zuma National Park, Science Fair at Paramount Ranch/Malibu Creek Camping, Columbia Memorial Space Center, UC Irvine Science field trip hosted by MAES (Mexican American Engineers and Scientists)

11 Summary of First Year Outcomes  2012/2013 Outcomes Number of students enrolled in Construction pathway in 2012: 35 Projection: 32 will receive MC3 certification by the end of September 2013 180 enrolled in HSD program 56 obtained HSD in 2012; 39 obtained HSD in 2013 2012 Alumni: 23 placed in general labor jobs, 9 PSE (undecided career paths), 6 (undecided career paths) in both as of 4/13 Need to acquire data regarding number of certificates obtained by 2012 alumni, students in high demand occupations, jobs retained after 3 months

12 Summary of Second Year Outcomes  2013/2014 Projections  35 enrolled in Construction training; Projection: 32 will receive MC3 certification by the end of June 2014  140 enrolled in HSD program; 46 obtain HSD  2 enrolled in IBEW, L18 and LA DWP’s UPCT program; Projection:1 completer  5 enrolled in Health Care course - Partnership with Red Cross; Projection: 3 completers  10 enrolled in Technology and Computer Skills Training - Partnership with local post-secondary education institutions; Projection: 6 completers  35 placed in PSE institution and/or employed in career path

13 Improvements For Next Year  To “improve job and post secondary placements, including high demand career training” PSE, build upon and expand existing PSE curriculum ○ use assessment tools more effectively to plan career and credential partnerships Incorporate Mental Toughness throughout the year ○ 7 times a year (Summer, and for 1 week at the beginning of Units 1 and 2 of each trimester) - incorporate college and career readiness into curriculum; invite employers to give 30-minute presentations to members; have members give resumes to these employers; members and LA CAUSA staff to follow up with members.

14 Improvements For Next Year  To “strengthen career pathways focused on middle-skill occupations in high growth sectors in local labor market” Utility pre-craft training (UPCT) through IBEW, Local 18 IBEW, Local 11 Health Care Technology Computer skills training/certification Viridis Learning

15 Improvements For Next Year  To “expand existing partnerships and establish new partnerships w/ employers in high growth sectors” RePower LA - LAANE partnership with Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LA DWP) - Participants who successfully complete UPCT are placed in a job at the LA DWP. Healthcare – White Memorial Hospital and LAC/USC Technology/Computer skills – Local businesses

16 Improvements For Next Year  To “expand existing partnerships and establish new partnerships with postsecondary....and other programs that provide credentials w/ labor market value” Use assessment tools more effectively ELAC, Cal State Los Angeles LA Trade Tech Red Cross IBEW, Local 18 & LA DWP IBEW, Local 11

17 Summarize Plan to Comply With the Grant  Gather more detailed information about 2012 alumni activity  Work on placements  Build stronger partnerships with Red Cross, ELAC, Cal State LA, IBEW, Locals 11 & 18, LA Trade Tech  Build stronger partnerships with employers, such as White Memorial, LAC/USC, LA DWP, local business that rely on technology and computer skills
