Butterflies lay their eggs on the plants that will provide food for their young when they hatch.

The larvae or caterpillar hatches from the egg. It begins to eat almost immediately.

Caterpillars shed their skins to form a chrysalis or cocoon.

When the chrysalis hatches, a butterfly emerges, however, it takes some time for its wings to dry.

Finally, the butterfly is ready to soar.
