2 We use PBIS, don’t we?  Many believe PBIS means being positive or using praise.  Tangible rewards can negatively affect intrinsic motivation.  PBIS was designed for students with disabilities, but our kids are too low to incorporate this program.  Why should I have to teach kids to be good?

3 We use PBIS, don’t we?  Why can I not just expect good behavior?  They know better and/or know what they are doing.  I recognize good behavior all the time.

4 Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of school- wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. pbis.org@2013

5 Safe & Civil Schools – 2008/2009 SY  Six days of training and planning for implementation for the 2009-2010 school year. It guides schools through a proactive and positive school-wide discipline plan. It helps a school staff develop and implement effective behavior management and motivation practices as well as behavior support for all children.

12 What we learned….  Bi-weekly meetings crucial  Core team members important  Harder for SXI & SCI teachers  Students love assemblies  It must become routine  Everything incorporates STAR theme  Some staff may not incorporate the program as comprehensively as others  Kick-off at start of the school year

14 Results of our PBIS:  Routine language for ALL staff  Reduced use of time-out booth and physical restraints  Reduced number of behavior incident reports  Required procedures to be established  Required procedures for behavior data to be put into place  Enhanced school climate  Improved school safety
