WHAT IS HISTORY? History means ‘To Enquire’ This means to ‘Ask questions about the past and help make sense of it’ A person who studies the past is called an ‘HISTORIAN’

How do we find out about the Past? Firstly an historian gathers EVIDENCE This Evidence could be either PRIMARY EVIDENCE or SECONDARY EVIDENCE

Chronology After the Historian has got their Evidence he has to sort it He can do this by putting it in date order This is called CHRONOLOGY

5 DETECTIVE QUESTIONS HISTORY QUESTIONS WHO? Who wrote the Source? Did they have any beliefs or attitudes that may affect their views WHAT? What Information does the Source give? Is it only fact or are opinions being given? WHEN? When was the Source Created? Did the Writer have first hand experience? WHERE? Where was the Source created? WHY? Why was the Source written? Did the Author have an aim?
