The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - is the full name of GB.

The population of Britain is over 58 million. Great Britain and Northern Ireland are separated by the Irish Sea. The north-west and west of Great Britain is surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. In the east the country is washed by the North Sea. In the south it is separated from France by the English Channel. In England there are many rivers but they are not deep. The longest river is the Severn and the deepest Thames.

England The capital of England is London. The symbol of England is the Red Rose. The population of England is over 52 million people. London is situated on the River Thames. Many famous people lived in London: Mozart, Karl Marks, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin lived and worked here.

Scotland The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. The symbol of Scotland is the Thistle. Five million people live in Scotland.

WALES The symbol of Wales is the Daffodil. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. About 3 million people live in Wales.

Northern Ireland The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The symbol of NI is the Shamrock. One and a half million people live in Northern Ireland.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGLAND, GREAT BRITAIN AND THE UK? England is one of the countries of the United Kingdom, and has a separate identity from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Great Britain is the island consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is the political entity consisting of England, Scotland and Wales, plus Northern Ireland

The most famous place of England is Stratford- upon-Avon. It is a small town in the centre of England. The town was founded about 800 years ago. Stratford-upon-Avon has become famous as the birth place of William Shakespeare. He died there on his birthday in 1616 and was buried in the church of Stratford-upon-Avon. Stratford-upon-Avon also attracts people from all over the world by its Royal Shakespeare Theatre – “Globe Theater”. In this theatre only Shakespeare's plays are performed.

Westminster Abbey is a historical building and a holy place. It was founded in 1050 as a monastery. Then it was rebuilt. Almost every English king has been crowned in this place and buried in the church since 1308.

Westminster Cathedral It was built between 1895 and 1903. This is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop and the leading Roman Catholic Church in England. Its bell tower is 84 metres high.

Parliament House is known around the world as a business card in London. This is the famous Big Ben with antique clock and a huge bell.

Big Ben Big Ben, the big clock tower, is the symbol of London. It strikes hours.

St. Paul’s Cathedral St.Paul’s Cathedral is a famous building too. Prince Charles and Princess Diana married here in 1981.

Over the dark waters of the Thames stretched famous Tower Bridge, recognizable throughout the world. Tower Bridge is a bascule-bridge. The bascules will open to let ships pass through.

RIVER THAMES Thames flows through London. The River Thames is 338 km long. It is 245 m wide here. Even big seaships can visit London.

British Museum - the main historical and archaeological museum of the UK and one of the largest museums in the world. The museum was founded in 1753.

MADAME TUSSAUDS WAX MUSEUM Here you can see famous people, good and bad, made of wax. This is Queen Elizabeth I.

Trafalgar Square - one of the most famous places in London. Located in the heart of London.

Trafalgar Square There are always a lot of people and pigeons on the square. Every winter there is a big Christmas tree which is a gift from Norway in the middle of the square. On New Year’s Eve people gather around the tree.

Hyde Park is quite popular both among the inhabitants of London, and among the curious tourists.

Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the British monarch (Queen Elizabeth II). It was built in 1703. There is a great collection of paintings. Located across the street of Pall Mall and Green Park to the white marble with gilded monument to Queen Victoria. When the king is in the palace, on the roof of the palace flies the Royal Standard.
