What is TESA? TESA and the ICSD

What is TESA? TESA is a teacher training program that takes place over six three hour sessions after school. Teachers learn 3 new interactions each session, (total of 15 interactions). These interactions fall within three categories: response opportunity, feedback and personal regard. Teachers observe each other practicing these interactions in their classrooms between sessions.

TESA is based on the belief that the surest way to create change is to change ourselves.
TESA is structured to increase teacher awareness of their perceptions and how their perceptions affect their expectations of both perceived high and low achieving students. TESA is concerned not just with the quantity of interactions, but also the quality of interactions.

What is the history of TESA?
TESA was developed in 1970 under an Elementary and Secondary Education Title III grant to the Los Angeles County Office of Education. TESA was conceived by Mary Martin, who directed the project during the first two years while the teacher training program was developed and tested. TESA is based on the work of Good & Brophy. Sam Kerman directed TESA during the dissemination phase, designed the facilitator training component, and spread awareness of TESA throughout the country.

TESA and the ICSD The ICSD started training teachers in TESA in the mid 1980s. Participation in TESA has been an expectation for all second year teachers in our district. TESA is the longest, continuous staff development program in the ICSD.
