What is NAEP?  The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in core subjects.  It is commonly knows as The Nation’s Report Card.  The 2015 results are expected in November. 3

4. What is NAEP?  Survey designed to produce a picture of achievement for the country and individual states – Results only for populations of students – Allows comparisons state to state and to the nation as a whole – Does not have district or school results 4

5. Characteristics of NAEP  Carefully designed sampling procedure  Low-Stakes and anonymous  Given at grades 4, 8 and 12  Subjects with a NAEP assessment: – Math, Reading, Science, Writing, U.S. History, Civics, Economics, Arts, Geography, Technology and Engineering Literacy 5

6. NAEP 2016 – South Dakota  Pilot study for Digital Based Assessments (DBA) – Tablets provided, no school computers  Small sample of students – Grades 4 and 8 – Mathematics or Reading  Assessment window – January 26 to March 4, 2016 6

7. NAEP 2015 – South Dakota  NAEP Field Staff come into the schools and administer the assessment. – Field staff are South Dakota residents hired by Westat. – School is asked to have some staff monitor.  Goal is to minimize the burden on schools as much as possible. 7
