What is a close read? Why do we perform a close read? Close reading is a careful and purposeful rereading of the text. It is an interaction between the reader and a text. It involves rereading; often rereading a short portion of text that helps a reader to carry new ideas to the whole text. Essentially, close reading means reading to uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension.

How do we close read a cartoon? Start with who, what, when, where, and how? Write down questions you would ask the cartoonist. Is there a theme? Is there a message? Write it down! Answer one of the following questions This makes me think… I can picture… This is like… This reminds me….. The big idea here is….. This is interesting because

Inferences about the second cartoon Characters: mom and son How old is the son? Is he living at home? Is he a college graduate? Are more college graduates living at home? Is his argument valid? Should he try if he thinks he will fail? Has this son tried to get a job? Should the mother kick him out if he is an adult? What is the message of this cartoon? Cartoonists love to make a point about life around!

Periods 1 and 6: Writing Assignment Instructions: Find a cartoon online, in a newspaper, magazine, or anywhere else. Copy or paste it to an 8x10 sheet of paper. Do not paste it onto lined paper. Close read it. Mark it up. You may follow the guidelines you received today. Your own inferences and questions are encouraged as well! Write your first and last name on the left hand corner of the paper. Due SEPTEMBER 18 th !

Wrap it up Keep the close read handout in your folder. You will need it next week. Greek and Latin vocabulary packet due tomorrow! Quiz tomorrow. Review your vocabulary tonight! Periods 1 and 6: no notebook or notecards. Periods 2,3,4. No notebooks, but you may use a 4x6 notecard on the quiz
