Agents of Socialization: specific individuals, groups, and institutions that enable socialization to take place Primary agents of socialization: Family Peer group School Mass Media

Most important agent of socialization Role is to socialize young children Can be: Intentional (Ex: Father teaches child about telling the truth) Unintentional (Ex: Father tells child to be polite but child often sees father being rude) Families are different and many can vary according to a combination of subgroups (race, social class, religion, etc)

Peer Group: Composed of individuals of roughly equal age and similar social characteristics Very influential during pre-teen and early teen years Members will shape themselves into the person they think the group wants them to be Focus of subculture of group (norms and values)

Much of socialization is deliberate Schools attempt to transmit cultural values (patriotism, responsibility, citizenship, etc.) There is unintentional socialization taking place there as well

Mass Media: Instruments of communication that reach large audiences with no personal contact between those sending the information and those receiving the information Major forms = books, films, Internet, magazines, TV, etc. TV: Has most influence Negative criticisms (violence, image of white middle- class society) Positive criticisms (expands viewers’ world)

Total Institution: Setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society for a set period of time and are subject to tight control Examples: prison, military boot camp, monasteries, psychiatric hospital Primary concern is resocializing member to become a part of normal society again Resocialization: Involves break with past experiences and learning of new values and norms Once sense of self has been weakened it is easier to conform/control them
