The FAMILY MOST Important We learn much of our early values, norms, etc. from our families

The PEER GROUP Influential mostly in adolescence and beyond… We are concerned with being accepted by our peers and will act similarly to “fit in”

The SCHOOL Occupies a large part of our day (for 13-20 years!) Schools have specific classes that teach those things which are society values: Reading, writing, math, science, civics, health, etc. Why is there no basket-weaving course?! Schools transmit cultural values like patriotism, ethics, responsibility, citizenship, leadership… Others??

The MASS MEDIA NO Newspapers, magazines, books, TV, radio, films, and other forms of media with NO personal contact between individuals sending and receiving information DYK DYK… 98% of American homes have a TV turned on for 7 hrs. a day?!

Other Agents of Socialization… Religion Values 65% of US practices Work Little League 4-H Etc.

Total Institution People are isolated from society for a set period of time and subject to the control of officials Ex. Prisons, boot camps, monasteries Purpose often is to re-socialize individuals
