Steps in the Decision Making Process Identify the decision to be made List your resources and options Analyze and study your options Make your decision Act on your decision Evaluate your decision BUT CONSIDER THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR CHOICE Following these steps may seem awkward at first. With practice, the steps become automatic.

Qualities of a Responsible Leader Willingness to listen Ability to build a team Ability to clearly identify team goals Ability to solve conflicts within the team Willingness to participate with team members Ability to manage time, money, and other group resources

TEKS #27c Qualities of effective team members All teams must have a common goal Mission Effective teams have a clear mission and purpose. It may be a short-term objective (select a vendor for a project) or a long, ambitious goal (find ways to improve customer satisfaction). Regardless, teams need a defined, mutually agreed upon purpose and mission. TEKS #27c Qualities of effective team members Commitment Team members must be committed to the team's mission. Commitment develops as members begin to personalize their involvement and take ownership for the team's success. Commitment may come immediate for some team members, and it may take some time for others. Team members must agree to some level of commitment

TEKS #27c Qualities of effective team members Norms/Ground Rules "You've got to play by the rules." That old saying applies to teams. Effective teams have explicit and appropriate ground rules and norms. On example might be, "Team meetings will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m." or "Team members agree to rotate roles from meeting to meeting." Ground rules provide teams with guidelines and a common set of procedures by which to operate.

TEKS #27c Qualities of effective team members An Effective Process Competent, goal-oriented teams agree on a process for success. Teams are unique, no two work exactly alike. Regardless of the process a team embraces, team members must agree on the process and understand their role. (Specific roles and responsibilities are covered elsewhere in this program.) Teams should agree on a process by which to function and make decisions

TEKS #27c Qualities of effective team members Plan, Do, Check, Act The Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle (PDCA) is a simple process teams can use to govern their actions. 1. Plan Gather information, assess resources, define problems, map out a method for action. 2. Do Implement the above plan; monitor results and keep records as necessary. 3. Check Examine the data, talk to others and gather more information to measure the effects of your plan and actions. 4. Act Based on the data, results and other information, modify the action and adjust your plan. Consider the Plan, Do, Check, Act process for operating as a team.

TEKS #27 D & E Promoting appreciation and understanding of diversity in teams at work/ school The work of the team is to seek inclusion of everybody's ideas and everybody's point of view," she explains. "The wider the point of view or the wider the diversity, the more effective the team can be. But for this to happen, people have to learn to see each other as equals, and that's not easy." Men talk over women, she says. Whites expect that people of color communicate the same way they do. People with accents are assumed to be less qualified; older employees, less creative; workers with disabilities, less capable.

TEKS #27 D & E Promoting appreciation and understanding of diversity in teams at work/ school But diversity issues go way beyond obvious physical differences to include differences in communication styles, problem solving, professional experience, functional expertise, management level, training and education, and work ethics. When team members don't recognize these differences for what they are, unfair stereotypical judgments occur.

Review Analyze the situation- What advice would you give parents of a teen who failed to accept responsibility for his/her decision that negatively affected the family? History- Select from history examples of decisions that affected large numbers of people. In small groups, choose one of the examples and discuss the consequences of the decision. Talk about the possible consequences that might have occurred if the decision had been reversed.
