 THE PROCESS OF OFFICIATING A SPORTING EVENT BY MAXIMIZING THE CONCEPTS AND PHILOSOPHIES, RULES KNOWLEDGE/INTERPRETATIONS, GAME MANAGEMENT, GOOD JUDGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS AMONG YOUR FELLOW OFFICIALS, PLAYERS AND COACHES……THEN KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THEM TO THAT CONTEST

 As an official, we are individually responsible for knowing the rules of the game first and foremost but how we choose to apply them in different situations will be defining of our character  Get the fouls that directly affect or could have an impact on that play  Always stay on top of Safety and UNS fouls  Don’t micro officiate, get the train wrecks and pass on the fender benders

 Officiate advantage/disadvantage more times than not. Understand and recognize the flow of the game and the level of competition. Never let you emotions reflect how you react to situations and officiate thereafter

 Read….Pause….React, Patient flags are good  Understanding that we must see the entire play before we can make a legitimate decision on whether or not a foul has been committed…..or did the latter portion of the play create a “false positive” thought???  Get the foul/play correct-----Mechanics are designed as a base format to put officials in the best position possible, we as officials have to adjust constantly!!! Don’t get caught up in your position and loose sight of your coverage

 Crew communication among officials, is one of the most critical aspects of insuring a smooth game and consistent flow  Preventative officiating by recognizing potential issues that could arise early in the contest------relaying that information to coaches/players/crew will hopefully defuse some issues in advance of penalties  PENALTY ADMINISTRATION: BE A CREW SAVER……..Most misapplied penalties can be attributed to poor communication more so than lack of rule knowledge, from the reporting aspect---- lack of or wrong information----”nascar mode.”  ITS NOT ALL ON THE REFEREE…….Penalty Administration should be checked and double checked by ALL members of the crew!!!!! Its too late to speak up and talk about it in the dressing room or on the way home
