 First basemen are assigned the number 3 in the scorebook.  They are responsible for fielding balls in their area, as well as bunts.  When there is a runner on first base, the first basemen must stand right next to the bag in case the pitcher throws over to try and pick the runner off.  First basemen must be the cut-off man for right fielders and center fielders when a runner is going home, and the ball is in the outfield.

 The assigned position number for 2 nd basemen is 4.  The second basemen has different responsibilities in different situations  With a runner on, and a ball hit to the left side, they must cover second base.  Balls hit to right field, or right center they are the cutoff man *excludes when there is a play at home.  If a runner is stealing, with a right handed batter, they cover second to get the throw from the catcher, with a left handed batter, they back up the shortstop who covers second to get the throw from the catcher.  With a runner on first or runners on first and second, the objective is to turn a double play (get the out at second and then throw to 1 st base)

 How to turn a double play

 The designated position number for third basemen is number 5.  Third basemen have a big responsibility playing in what is known as “the hot corner”.  They are the first to cover bunts.  On a play at third, they line up where the throw is going.

 The shortstop has the assigned position number of 6.  The shortstop is often considered the leader of the field, and a lot of times is the teams best player.  Shortstops jobs are to….  Be leader of infield  Field balls in their area  Turn double plays  Be the cut-off for many outfield plays  Cover second base on a steal
