In the United States, areas on the west side of a mountain range typically receive more precipitation than areas on the east side of the mountain range. Which of these factors is LEAST important in explaining this phenomenon? a.Weather systems tend to move from west to east in the U.S. b.Condensation usually occurs in a humid air mass as it cools. c.Water as a liquid has greater density than water as a solid. d.The temperature of an air mass is reduced as it rises.

21
Since more of the sun’s rays are absorbed the equator than at the poles, a heat imbalance exists. Two phenomena help transfer this heat, name one
22
Global wind patterns ocean currents
23
Which of the following statements describes what happens when the sun heats water and land? A. Land heats more slowly than water does. B. Water heats more slowly than land does. C. Water and land absorb heat from the sun at the same rate. D. Both absorb heat at the same rate, but water releases it faster.
24
B. Water heats more slowly than land does.
25
Throughout any given day the sun’s rays strike earth’s surface where much of it is absorbed changing to heat. This heat then transfers itself to the air directly above the surface primarily through radiation. What does the warmer air now do and what is the name of the process?
26
Expands and rises, convection

45
Which one of the following statements best explains why climates at continental shorelines generally have a smaller yearly temperature range than inland climates at the same latitude? A. Land changes temperature rapidly, due to the high specific heat and lack of transparency of land. B. Land is a poor absorber and a poor conductor of heat energy. C. Ocean water changes temperature slowly, due to the high specific heat and transparency of water. D. Ocean water is a good absorber and a good conductor of heat energy.
