3 What is Hanukkah? Known as the “Festival of Lights” and also for “Feast and Dedication”. Hebrew verb in Jerusalem meaning “to dedicate”. Hanukkah is a eight day Jewish holiday people celebrate for rededication of the Holy Temple (Second Temple) in Jerusalem.

4 The Candelabrum Nine branched Menorah or Hanukiah (also known as a Candle). There is one additional light called the Shemash. (most the time the middle tall one) They light a candle everyday starting on the 25 Kislev and ending on the 2 Tevet or 3 Tevet.

5 Why Is Hanukkah a Holiday?
This is the time when the Jews regained control of Jerusalem and rededicated the temple. They Celebrate by lighting a candle until the last day of Hanukkah. This year Hanukkah was celebrated Wednesday, November 27 – Thursday, December

6 Food Most foods are fried or baked in oil (olive oil)
To honor the flask of oil keeping the flame in the Temple alight for exactly eight days. Some traditional foods include are: Potato Pancakes (known as Latkes in Yiddish) Jam Filled Donuts (Israeli families) Bimuelos (fritters) which are deep fried.

7 Music There is a numerous of amount of Hanukkah songs.
Most popular songs are: Hanukkiah Li Yesh (I have a Hanukkah Menorah) Ocho Kadenlikas (Eight Little Candles) Kad Katan (A Small Jug) Etc…

8 Games One of the most popular Hanukkah games is called the Dreidel.
Majority of children play this game. Game is so simple even a cat can play!

9 Symbolic importance One important symbol is a chocolate gold coin called Hanukkah Gelt. They do this to add holiday excitement. They celebrate or at least do this because this dates back when kids gave teachers a sum of their money to show their gratitude.
