Colour Visual Merchandising advertising and displays

2 Colour Schemes There are five basic color schemes. They are warm & cool colors, Monochromatic, Complementary, Analogous, and Triadic colors.

3 Complementary Colour displays
The colours used in the display are directly opposite one another on the color wheel. E.g. yellow & purple, red & green, blue & orange. Used when great contrast is required

4 Monochromatic color schemes
Consisting of only one color (plus tones of that color). E.g.. A red monochromatic scheme may contain pure red and various shades of red. Very effective for creating mood

5 Analogous color scheme
uses colors that are beside each other. are said to be harmonize. E.g.. Yellow, yellow-green, yellow orange. Excellent for seasonal themes; E.g. fall.

6 Warm & Cool color schemes
The color wheel can be divided into two halves warm: yellow orange, red Cool: blue, green, purple excellent for seasonal and temperature setting themes

7 Triadic color scheme Any three colors evenly spaced from each other on the color wheel. e.g. a combination yellow, red, and blue.

8 Guidelines for colour in displays
background should highlight rather than compete or dominate items stand out best when complementary colours are used using a different tone… otherwise colour will fight for the customers attention e.g. yellow with shades of purple

9 Guidelines continued Depth: Small displays:
neutral or pale colours in background Small displays: use pure colours for both merchandise and background lack of reference points and contrast will make display seem larger than it really is.

10 Guidelines continued merchandise arrangement:
brightly coloured in front of dark-coloured… creates impression of depth. Eyes will move from bright to darker. Multi-coloured: from left to right as it appears on colour wheel … from warm to cool… creates a striking ribbon effect.

11 Guideline continued Colour Schemes:
Only one of the five schemes should be used in any one display caution should be used with overuse of one colour or clashing colours e.g. red is cheerful, bright, strong emotions… increases blood pressure and pulse rate… too much can give unpleasant tension
