In the late 1800’s, corruption began to grew in American worker. Their concerns became worse.

U.S court frequently ruled that strikes were illegal and issued injunctions to force employees back to work.

A nation wide strike occurred in 1877. Railroad workers struck in the middle of an economic depression.

After receiving a second pay cut within a short period of time, violence erupted.

President Hayes dispatched federal forces to protect the railroad, the first use of such soldiers in a labor matter. The rationale for the show of strength was the government’s need to protect the mail.
