1 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

2

3 Photosynthesis

4 Photosynthesis Vocabulary
Photosynthesis- A process by which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food energy (glucose), and oxygen. Chloroplast- organelle containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place. Chlorophyll- __________________________.

5 Photosynthesis Equation
6 H2O + 6 CO2 + light  6 O2 + C6H12O6 Water+ Carbon + solar  Oxygen + glucose dioxide energy (carbohydrate) (Reactants) (Products)

6 The chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight.
Chlorophyll is the green pigment inside the chloroplasts of plant cells that makes leaves green!

7 Chlorophyll then uses sunlight to change water, carbon dioxide and, nutrients from the soil into glucose and release oxygen. CO2

8 Cellular Respiration

9 Respiration Vocabulary
Respiration- The process by which the chemical energy of "food" molecules (glucose) is released. Mitochondria-organelles which convert the energy stored in glucose into ATP for the cell. ATP- a molecule that is the main energy source for cells (adenosine triphosphate)

10 What do you notice about this equation?
Respiration Equation 6 O2 + C6H12O6  6 H2O + 6 CO2 + ATP Oxygen + glucose  water + carbon + energy (sugar) dioxide (Products) (Reactants) What do you notice about this equation?

11 Animals & Plants Rely On Each Other
Animals use: Plants use: Glucose from plants Carbon dioxide from animals Oxygen from plants

12 The mitochondria change the O2 and glucose into CO2, H2O, and ATP

13 Cycle of Carbon and Oxygen

14 They are opposites of each other!
Comparing Equations Photosynthesis Equation: Water + carbon dioxide + energy  oxygen + glucose Respiration Equation: oxygen + glucose  water + carbon dioxide + energy They are opposites of each other!

15 Photosynthesis Activity
What is photosynthesis? What happens? What is needed? What is produced?

17 Black = Carbon Blue = Oxygen Red = Hydrogen

18 O H Water H2O C O Carbon Dioxide CO2

19 Oxygen O2 O

20 Photosynthesis Activity
What is photosynthesis? The process by which a plant cells make glucose and oxygen

21 Photosynthesis Activity
What happens? Carbon Dioxide and Water are combined to make glucose and oxygen

22 Photosynthesis Activity
What is needed? Six Molecules of Water H2O Six Molecules of Carbon dioxide CO2

23 Photosynthesis Activity
What is produced? One Molecule of Glucose C6H12O6 Six Molecules of Oxygen O2
