Writing a Scientific Research Paper Science Fair Background Research

Develop your question Does the rate of cellular respiration in yeast cells change if you change the source of sugar

Determine the Variables  Independent Variable: Types of Sugar  Dependent Variable: Rate of Cellular respiration

Research  You must provide background information about the: 1. Independent variables 2. Dependent variables 3. The subject you are testing 4. Any vocabulary that needs to be defined

What are you testing?  Rate of Cellular Respiration  Define what cellular respiration is  Give the equation  Describe where it occurs  Describe why it is important  Describe the opposite process (photosynthesis)

Describe Yeast  What type of organism is it: prokaryote, eukaryote- what do those terms mean  Where do you find it?  Where is it used?  How does it relate to cellular respiration?

Discuss Independent Variable  Discuss each of the sugars you are using:  Maple syrup, table sugar, honey, splenda, stevia Describe why those sugars are relevant to your experiment?

Discuss the Dependent Variable  Describe cellular respiration in yeast  Describe what you might expect to see as an outcome in your experiment  Describe why your experiment is important to improving society

Bibliography  You must collect data on where you are retrieving your information in a bibliography!  Please use at least five different sources which can include: website, magazine, books, encyclopedia, etc  Use MLA format!
