Constant Rhyme- represents piano booming in background. Could also represent the simplicity of childhood. 4 lines in a stanza 2 lines in the stanza are about the past 2 are about present. Tone- represents his struggle. His desire to be a man as well his desire to return to his childhood. Lawrence was a 20 th Century novelist. He was right wing, but not fascist. He was born to an illiterate father. His mother was a teacher. Lawrence was very close to his mother & this poem is one of many he wrote about her. PIANO-D.H. LAWRENCE

To begin with, the description is vague, the persona only mentions a woman. Later, we learn she is the mother. More info. Mimics the way in which the memories are reforming in the personas head; quicker & more clearly. Implies that growing up is a journey away from childhood, that growing up is a climb, and to return to the simplicity of childhood he needs to get ‘back down’ Vista: pleasing view or a succession of events through mental remembrance. Showcases the memories & happiness of childhood in a dream- like, heavenly manner. Emphasizes his youth. As a child, the notes of the piano sounded loud in his ears & his recollection of the sounds remain the same in his memories despite the different way he hears the piano now. Signifies the extent to which the sound of the piano is etched in his memory. Importance. Onomatopoeia. Allows us to envision the child sitting under the piano, hear the boom of it and feel the vibrations that its keys create. Sees the mother as elegant, knows what she’s doing. Respects her. Sibilance- represents intimacy and love between mother and child

More negative tone; almost like he doesn’t want to remember, doesn’t want to feel these emotions. Trying to withhold them. Betrays me back is alliteration-his emotions are betraying him. Reluctant to allow himself to feel Suggests that this comfortable family life is no longer present Piano acted as a passageway into adulthood. Reinforces how important music was in his upbringing and in navigating through his childhood Personification- piano is the catalyst for his nostalgia.

Climax of the performance? Overwhelmed by the music induced emotions that have engulfed him. The use of this word creates a strong image of something being thrown away forcefully and powerfully. He doesn’t just lose his manhood, it is hurled away from him at the sound of the familiar piano keys being played. Contrast between the ‘glamour’ of the childhood memories and the ‘flood of remembrance’. -Memories are good but is it good for the persona to be reminded of them? Brings us back to the present Implies that he is no longer in control of his emotions and memories. He is not only remembering but they are ‘upon’ him. Fading of his manhood reiterated by this simile. Uncommon & not stereotypical for men to cry or bear emotions. Metaphor for the overflow of memories he has. Once he allows himself to remember, the memories come like an avalanche. Once the persona lets go of the reluctance to feel, and permits himself to return to his childhood, he feels that he is unable to have both his adult self and childhood self co-exist within him.
