Land Vehicles By: Arlen Rincon & Samara Arroyo Period 1A Due- 11/26/12

Hypothesis What we thought about this topic before researching it, was that it was going to be an easy topic to research about and interesting.

Geographical Reference
In the first World War, land vehicles started getting built. Took place in Britain. These vehicles were called “Land ships”.

5 Questions What tank was the first created in Great Britain?
During the holocaust how did good soldiers use transportation in some cases? What equipment was transported in WWII? What was not a major weapon system? What country had the largest industrial capacity?

Description Major weapon used in battles. Big impact in society.
Life changing. Still big impact today. Used for communication.

History- When & How Land vehicles started being used during the start of World War II. It was proved to be a war of movement. Britain was the only one at that time that entered the war with a fully motorized with military. America started retiring horses as military to enter with motorized military too.

History- People Nicolas Joseph Cugnot ( ). He invented the very first self propelled vehicle. This vehicle was used as a military tractor. Nicolas was a french engineer and mechanic. This vehicle was used by a french army to haul artillery.

History- People Oliver Evans (Sept. 13, 1755) At 16 years old he was a wheelwright. After two years he stares inventing his new high-pressure steam engine. He also invented textile industries tools and milling equipment and in 1782 he built the first automatic mill. In 1789 he was granted for a steam powered land vehicle.

History- People Richard Trevithick ( ) His invention was the road carriage powered by steam which was considered the first tramway locomotive. Even though his invention was designed for a road and not a railroad. He did not really receive credit in his lifetime.

History- People Francois Isaac de Rivaz ( ) He was an inventor and politician. He invented the hydrogen powered internal combustion engine, which was considered “the worlds first internal combustion powered automobile”. It used a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. Even though his was a very unsuccessful design.

History- People Samuel Brown He was an English engineer and inventor who was known as the credited inventor of the earliest internal combustion engine. It was used to power a vehicle. He was known as the “father of the gas engine”.

History- People Henry Ford He was an American industrialist. He wasn’t an inventor of the automobile but was the sponsor of mass production. He manufactured the first automobile that many middle class Americans could actually afford to buy. The introduction of the Model T Automobile revolutionized transportation and American Industry.

Timeline 1769- First self propelled road vehicle invented by French engineer, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot First U.S steam powered land vehicle that was granted to Oliver Evans A road carriage powered by steam was built by Richard Trevithick An internal combustion engine was invented by Francois Isaac de Rivas An internal combustion engine with separate combustion and working cylinders was invented by Samuel Brown The first crude electric carriage was invented by Robert Anderson.

Three Quotes Quote # 1 "I have been branded with folly and madness for attempting what the world calls impossibilities, and even from the great engineer, the late Mr. James Watt , who said to an eminent scientific character still living, that I deserved hanging for bringing into use the high-pressure engine. This so far has been my reward from the public; but should this be all, I shall be satisfied by the great secret pleasure and laudable pride that I feel in my own breast from having been the instrument of bringing forward and maturing new principles and new arrangements of boundless value to my country. However much I may be straitened in pecuniary circumstances, the great honor of being a useful subject can never be taken from me, which to me far exceeds riches". Richard Trevithick in a letter to Davies Gilbert * We decided to choose this quote because we believe its important what Richard Trevithick left in a letter because his invention of the high-pressure engine didn’t receive much credit. And he believes it should have received enough credit.

Three Quotes Quote # 2 “There is one rule for the industrialist and that is make the best quality of goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible.” Henry Ford * We believe Henry Ford always had his mind in selling the best and always making money.

Three Quotes Quote # 3 “Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was to built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.” Henry Ford * This quote is important in a way that in the world there will always be new inventions and that’s what the world was made for.

Impact on Today The impact in today of land vehicles is that it has been the greatest creation in the world. Because of the fact that it helps us a lot in transportation and also communication. Without it, there wouldn’t be much advancement in the world.

Cause & Effect The major cause in why land vehicles was invented was because of its military weapons in battles. The way the British entered war during the start of World War II with motorized military made the Germans weaken its military because they were not prepared with motorized military like the British. This made other military's start the invention of land vehicles.

Opinion In our opinion we think it was a great idea that a lot of military’s started inventing their own military vehicles. It was a great help in being able to fight for battles.

How it is Connected How we think the invention of land vehicles is connected to another kind of invention, we think it would be the invention of the phone. Because the invention of the phone also had a great impact in society. And it still has a great impact today.

What Would We Have Done What we would have done living during that time when there was many new inventions of different kind of land vehicles we think it would have been life changing because it helped out a lot mostly in communicating. Also because it was an important military weapon.

Our Thoughts What we learned about this topic is that land vehicles have been one of the greatest inventions in the world and has developed over the years with the help of many inventors.

Answers to Our 5 Questions
The first tank in Great Britain was called the Cruiser Mk I, that was built in January 1939. In some cases good soldiers used transportation to help the Jews escape and to help transport Polish partisans to their meetings in Warsaw. Rifles, Pistols, Guns, Grenades, Infantry mortars & rocket launchers, Flamethrowers, Military swords, ect… What was not a major weapon system was an armored car because it wasn’t strong enough to be used in a battlefield. The United States had the largest industrial capacity because of its mobilization.
