2 STEP 1: Preparing to Read Become familiar with the story so you can use as much eye contact as possible Practice! –Are you enthusiastic? –Do you use different voices for different characters? Have a comfortable setting Keep groups small (base on age and interest) Use a transition and introduction to help children focus

3 Step 2: Introduce the Story Ask questions, or add personal comments“How many of you have a pet?” Use props (Look at page 299) Explain any words or concepts the children might not know Be excited about the activity!

4 Step 3: Read the story Read with pleasure and feeling Use eye contact Pause before a new character or idea Read in normal speaking voice Change tone, pitch or volume when appropriate

5 Step 4: Handle Interruptions Interruptions often happen when reading to children. --Accept interruptions and answer patiently --If there are many or continuous interruptions, say “Please save your questions for a little later.” --Ignore wiggling, or praise good listening

6 STEP 5: End the Story Ask questions about the characters, the plot or the setting “Thank you for listening” may be simple enough Give them a prop or have an art project related to the story Be prepared to reread a story!

9 Puppets Puppets can be of tin cans, popsicle sticks, socks, and other inexpensive materials Stuffed animals add visual interest
