Mary Magdalene, an Allusion In the Bible, Mary is portrayed as Jesus’ confidante and possible lover. However she is seen as of lower standing much like Carton yet remains subservient to the greater romance of the work: Jesus’ relationship with God. While ultimately Jesus, and not Mary, ends up sacrificing himself, he is still an ancillary figure in a larger movement, and his death absolves him of the sins and trials of his life, much like Mary’s interaction with Christ.

Tryin’ta Function Sydney serves as one of the book’s most dynamic characters, ultimately rising from his alcoholism and apathy to become a symbol of strength, honor, and nobility. His journey functions parallel to that of humankind, and to reflect the views of Dickens himself on humanity: from the darkness, sin, and ashes rises something beautiful and pure.
