Aims of the meeting: Share information about National changes Explain new system of assessment Explain what Parents will see & information they will receive Opportunity for questions

The Changes! All year groups are now following the new National Curriculum National Curriculum Levels no longer exist New age related expectations have been introduced by the Government

Reception Class Assessment Assessment in Foundation Stage (Reception) has not changed Initially assessed and tracked throughout the year against Development stages – Ages & Stages Uses Early Learning Goals at end of year with outcomes of either Emerging, Expected or Exceeding A child who achieves Early Learning Goals – Expected or above is considered to be at a good level of development at the end of Reception

New National Curriculum New National Curriculum is harder than the old – may have impact this year in particular The goal posts have moved for all year groups Not possible to transfer old levels into new National Curriculum so teachers will NOT be using this language of levels any more.

Assessment Without Levels As the Government removed the old National Curriculum it also removed the old levels, eg 2a, 3b etc It did NOT replace them The Government has left it to individual schools to come up with their own models for assessment The Government has produced age related expectations

What Pinchmill is doing… Research –Government ‘sponsored’ systems –Teaching School systems –Published systems Clear & carefully thought out Decision Making, considering: –Mixed age classes –Small school –Pupil led – -Parent involvement – -Impact on staff

Age Related Expectations Every year group in school has clearly identified Year Group Expectations in the new National Curriculum Assessment against these makes sense Used by many assessment models All children in year group must be taught Year Group Expectations, then independent work differentiated

Age Related Expectations Deep Learning not just coverage Tim Oates – http://www.cambridgeassessment.org.uk/insights/a ssessment-without-levels-extended-version-tim- oates-insights/ Pupil involvement & understanding of what is needed next Parents’ knowledge of where their child is currently, where the school is aiming for them to be by the end of the year, and what they can do to help, regular feedback.

Model of Assessment without Levels Combination of several models Clear for staff, pupils & parents Judgements of ‘Working Towards’, ‘Working Within’, ‘Achieved’ or ‘Exceeded’ Year Group Expectations will be reported to parents/carers To get ‘Achieved’ children need to have completely met 85% or more of the Year Group Expectations Won’t see as obvious a rate of progression as with levels on a termly or annual basis but progress can still be demonstrated clearly & in much clearer detail

Pinchmill’s Model All children, regardless of ability will begin the year as ‘Working Towards’ their new year group expectations Teachers will share, at Parents’ Consultation Evenings 2015/16(changed format) Teachers’ assessment sheets for Reading, Writing (incl. SPaG) and Maths

Experience it, Prove it, Apply it! Deeper Learning – each expectation must be met in 3 different ways (Experience it, Prove it, Apply it) Won’t do all 3 elements at same time Children’s involvement will increase with their age as they move up the school & get used to the new system Key personalised targets for Reading, Writing & Maths. Changed as children show they have fully achieved them (Experience it, Prove it & Apply it)

Word of Caution! As with any new system it will take time to ‘bed in’ We will continue to make some slight changes to it – it will continue to evolve Level of challenge is increased therefore, particularly in first year, we may not see as many children in ‘Exceeded’. Our ambitious longer term goal is to see all our pupils in ‘Working Within, Achieved or exceeded’.

Parents – We need your help! Parent Forum Group – key role in feedback to school on this issue. Need to ensure our parents understand the new system and the information we share about their child Changes already following feedback - weekly information on literacy and maths focus on website and class doors Information on age related expectations – booklet to go home Increased parent information meetings

Reporting to Parents November Parents’ Evenings – share Reading, Writing and Maths assessments in new format. Sample proposed format to be trialled by teachers in November. Next term we will issue our first ‘interim report’ showing where your child was in September, what their target is and where they are currently. Coded to show progress. In Summer, new end of year reports produced considering feedback from parent forum and information sessions

The future From September 2015 all year groups (excluding Reception) will follow the same system. Mini Reports will be issued one per term (from Spring Term) showing colour coded progress Parents’ Evenings in the Autumn Term will become an opportunity for teachers to share end of year targets with parents.

The Future - Nationally New baseline assessment for Reception as they start school from Sept 2015 New end of KS1 and end of KS2 SATs in May 2016. Not known how outcomes will be graded yet but will allow for comparisons between schools and nationally (using a scaled score?)
