Isotopes and Ions Since the number of Protons can’t change, what about the number of electrons or neutrons? IsotopesYup – You can change the number of Neutrons- which changes the mass, and some properties – these different massed atoms of one element are called Isotopes. Famous Isotopes – U-235, C-14, Pu-239, Po-210

What about changing the number of electrons? Adding or Subtracting Danger – math weirdness If you add electrons – the number is negative, if you subtract electrons, the number is positive. Ions Atoms with this “problem” – not neutral – are called Ions
