Cultural Advancement Education – Educational Standards Free public education Republican Virtues – promoting certain values such as self-reliance and hard work. – Importance of women – New Scholars such as Mercy Otis Warren (history/politics), Benjamin Rush (science), Benjamin Banneker (anti- slavery).

Social Change Population – 2.7 million in 1780 - - -12 million by 1830. Due mainly to high birth rate and immigration. Mobility – People move from place to place. Great opportunities to move West. People had to adapt to a new way of life and new people.

Social Change New rules regarding marriage – Courting. Religious Revival Religious movement -2 nd Great Awakening started in Kentucky and Tennessee. Importance of the congregation stressed. Women were very active in the movement. Many new denominations emerged – Baptists, Methodists, Adventists, Mormons, AME.
