Life Cycle of A Butterfly The first stage is the egg. Butterfly eggs come in various shapes some are oval some are circular some are ribbed and some have other features. The second stage is the larva. When the egg hatches a butterfly does not emerge but a caterpillar does. A butterfly goes through 4 stages before it becomes a butterfly. This is only stage two. The third stage is pupa. After a caterpillar has reached its full length and weight it wraps its self into a cacoon(pupa). While in the pupa many changes are made to the larva. The final stage is the adult butterfly. After the larva does all its forming in the pupa the butterfly will hatch anf pump blood into its wings and begin to fly.
