3  Reading Comprehension and Analysis › Elements of plot (to include conflict, complications, etc.) › Character development › Connections between history and literature › Understanding informative text and how it relates to literature › Assessment of reading skills on each summative assessment with a cold reading passage

4  Diverse Media Analysis › Analysis of differences and similarities in film vs. text › Analysis of pieces of art as a way to deliver a message › Analysis of lyrics in music and rhythm as it relates to literature and poetry

5  Vocabulary and Grammar › Figurative Language › Literary Elements › Verbals (participles, gerunds, infinitives) › Voice (passive and active) › Sentence structure

6  Written Expression (40%)  Reading Comprehension and Analysis (40%)  Vocabulary and Grammar (20%) › Weights will determine difference between HW/CW assignments (0.5), quizzes (1.0), tests/projects (2.0).

7  Gives us a true picture of what the student can do vs. completion/not doing assignments  Late formative (homework/practice work)– must turn in late for 10 points off  Late summative (projects & essays) – 5 points off for each day late up to one week. After one week, maximum grade = 70%.

8  Any student may recover any portion(s) of a summative assessment if score is below 75%.

9  Interactive Notebook  Thursday/Friday writing days  Independent Reading  Textbooks: will have class sets  If you want your student to have one, I’ll get one assigned to your student

10  Books! › Young adult › Nonfiction high interest › Adult novels Backgammon and checker games – for Wednesday Backgammon lunch
