4 Directions On a blank sheet of paper you will create a timeline by: 1.Title: The End of Slavery Timeline 2.Drawing a line from top to bottom about 1/3 of the width of the page from the left-hand edge 3.On the left you will write the dates and the right you will right the events 4.Entries that appear in RED in the PP need to be highlighted/underlined on your timeline

5 1501 First confirmed group of enslaved Africans brought to the New World

6 1619 Twenty black slaves arrive in Virginia

7 1772 Somerset decision outlaws slavery in England.

8 1775 Lord Dunmore promises slaves freedom if they fight for the British in the American Revolution

9 1784-88 Abolitionist societies formed in Great Britain, United States and France.

10 1791-1804 Haitian Revolution

11 1808 Britain and the United States outlaw participation in the Atlantic slave trade

12 1823 British government approves plan for gradual abolition in the colonies.

13 1833 Britain emancipates 800 000 slaves in the British colonies; owners compensated

14 1848 Liberal Revolution in France leads to the abolishment of slavery in French colonies

15 1850 Under pressure from Britain Brazil stops participating in the Atlantic slave trade

16 1861 American Civil War begins

17 1863 Emancipation Proclamation

18 1865 American Civil War ends; Thirteenth Amendment abolishes slavery

19 1870 Spain begins gradual emancipation

20 1888 Brazil passes immediate and uncompensated emancipation

21 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares slavery a crime against humanity

22 Now … Map Work On the map you will … 1.Color each of the following countries or empires a different color: - Use map on pg 684 1.British Empire 2.French Empire 3.Spanish Empire 4.United States 5.Brazil 2.Use the highlighted entries on your timeline to indicate geographically when each country/empire ended slavery
