Vocabulary Reconstruction – The period during which the U.S. began to rebuild after the Civil War from 1865 to 1877, primarily how the Federal government readmitted the southern states who seceded from the union. Secession – The formal withdrawal of a state from the Union. Confederacy – The group of Southern states who seceded from the Union in 1861. They considered themselves a new country: The Confederate States of America.

The incoming Lincoln administration and most of the Northern people refused to recognize the legitimacy of secession.
