Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium MDWG Co-Chair Report Group created at OGC TC, Athens, April 2009 –One Co-chair elected (CL), –Other Co-Chair recently (M-FV) Several people have offered support Several people/institutions want to be active but cannot attend today –Audio and Web broadcast (using Adobe Acrobat)

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium MDWG Progress Established OPEN mailing list and Twiki –Hydrology DWG did same Proposed MoU tabled at WMO CBS quadrennial meeting –Strong widespread support –CBS requested Secretary General to pursue –Raised at Executive Committee June 2009 Started information on OGC Twiki –(Thank you, Aaron and Marie-Francoise) Issued Questionnaire on WMS usage –Presented preliminary results at EGOWS Second workshop, OGC Standards in Meteorology planned –Météo-France, Toulouse, 23-26 November 2009

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium EGOWS 2009 European Graphical Operational Work-Stations Annual workshop, for Met Services, vendors, others 20 years Presented OGC work & Questionnaire –more tentative volunteers –Agreed to post Get Capabilities Issues: –Not enough information and / or expertise:- post on wikis –Data Policies:– reduce resolution or delay data for experiments –Disparate levels of expertise:- IEs with several domains & topics –Asynchronous nature / long transactions:- ? –Polar Stereographic specification:- ?

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium MDWG Issues How to get WMS IE up and running? Do we need more Questionnaire –Responses? –Results? Publish Get Capabilities documents on Twiki Priority, timeline and roadmap for other tasks How to handle Oceanography?

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium Motion 1 The Meteorology DWG recommends/requests that: Blah blah Moved: Second: Discussion: –Motion carried: –No objection to unanimous consent. –Motion rejected:

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium Actions Interested participants met 9am Wed, 23 June 2009 to discuss next steps –Proposals for interoperability experiments, possible coordination with GALEON, Oceans IE, etc. –Proposals for changes to propose for existing standards

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium MDWG Athens Planning Outcomes 1 Open membership – OGC Members, anyone for IE, WMO members when MoU established. Interoperability Experiment based, convergence with domain ‘best practice’ (bias towards ‘near operational’). Need to include non-meteo examples –inter-operability, not just intra-operability. Need to include diverse scenarios, such as: projecting the 4D cube onto a series of maps, dispersion plume “sensible weather objects”. Use open OGC collaboration tools by preference, use external only if not sufficient. Informal steering group, based on planning meeting attendees, formalise later.

Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2009 Open Geospatial Consortium MDWG Athens Planning Outcomes 2 Draft Outline plan Month 0 List volunteers with resources and commitment: CTL, SS, BD, SN, etc Planners CTL, SS(later), Mailing list moderators, Wiki moderators Document ‘best’ current practices or status quo, based on Charter, for non-meteorologists. CTL, M-FV Month 1 Advertise to communities for problems with OGC implementations, candidates for IEs and representatives WMS in particular Month 2 Prioritise concerns Month 3 Discuss and formalise plan for Boston TC (circulate at EGOWS (De Bilt) for comment Proposals for interoperability experiments, including coordination with GALEON, Oceans IE, etc. Month 3-9 WMS IEs Months 6-12 Proposals for changes to propose for existing standards. Draft WMS profile? Editor for standards documents? Metadata profile? WCS candidates for other IEs + representatives? Modelling ? Governance? Service Catalogues? WFS ?
