What does the Green Paper mean for us? Released Friday 6 th November - outlines plans for future of higher education Full impact apparent once outcome of the Spending Review is known Key highlights: – Teaching Excellence Framework - Improving the standard of teaching and linking it to fees – Widening participation - Targets to recruit more disadvantaged and ethnic minority students – Research councils and research funding - No specific proposals yet – Introduce an Office for Students as a ‘student champion’ – Market reforms to increase competition

Green Paper says: ‘TEF aims to build a culture where teaching has equal status with research’ Current metrics for teaching quality will be reviewed TEF will operate with a limited scope for the next two years using Quality Assurance Agency judgements to award institutions with TEF level 1 Full version of TEF will combine improved metrics with a qualitative application process, assessed by expert panels Levels will be awarded for set periods (3-5 years) and institutions will have an annual opportunity to apply for higher levels Universities that do well in the TEF will be able to raise fees in line with inflation Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)

UK League Tables – 10 th Guardian, 9 th Complete University Guide, 11 th The Times/ Sunday Times, 15 th Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey Shortlisted Times Higher Education Awards, University of the Year Employment – 84.9% graduate employment (grad level) – Lowest unemployment rate of all competitors 2.8% – 23.4% went into further study

Our Prevent Strategy Prevent is part of the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 - Statutory duty for higher education institutions to have ‘due regard to the need to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism’ – now the law, but requires a risk-based approach Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 University is low risk but not no risk Our approach – safeguarding Extra care about external speakers on campus Training/awareness raising for all senior leaders, PRCs, and ‘frontline’ staff

University Priorities 15/16 2015/16 Priorities 1.Increase overall entry tariff for UK/EU students 2.Increase research grants by at least 10% 3.Regain top 10 in the National Student Survey 4.UK/EU Undergraduate applications rise to 15,000 per annum
