…Do It Yourself Projects Like Deck Rebuilding… I thought a good two weeks of work ought to do it. Year One >

Year 2 So…The project ended up taking a little longer.

7 th Grade Science In the classroom, students will be learning science through model building, hands-on inquiry investigations, group discussions, and readings that will give them a better understanding of our complex world.

Central Question: What are the connections between the complex life on Earth and the environments in which they are found? Human Body to Cells Genetics Ecosystems The Nature of Earth’s Atmosphere and Oceans Change Over Time

Grading System: Summative Tests 75% Summative tests measure understanding on specific Washington State 7 th grade standards. Summative tests may be retaken during the two weeks following the test return and correction. A maximum score of 85% or “B” is possible. Retakes are usually taken in Study Club.

Grading System: Summative Test scores fall on a 10 point percentage scale from 100% to 50%. A = 90 – 100%B = 80 – 89% C = 70 – 79%D = 60 – 69% F = 50 – 59%*Lowest score 50% *Where the test is blank or answers borrowed, no credit is awarded.

Grading System: Performance: The other 25% Science journals, homework, and classroom work will be periodically be reviewed for completion and understanding.

What Standards? Science teachers across the state are transitioning from the 2009 K-12 Standards to the 2013 New Generation Science Standards. You may view both from my website Documents and Links, respectively. Students will be given multiple opportunities to work with the standards before summative testing.

Homework : Reading and… Students need to read for pleasure 30 minutes every day – library books are encouraged. E-Readers are also available in our library. Work not completed in class should be finished in study club or at home. Journals may go home. There will occasionally be written work sent home when practicing a new concept.

Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school…and in life? (Nagy & Herman, 1987)
