Various Kinds of Offerings
Burnt – Bull, ram , or male bird - atonement for unintentional sin Grain – Worship, recognition of God’s goodness Fellowship - Any animal without defect - thanksgiving (included a communal meal) Sin - Animal based on status – forgiveness, cleansing, or confession Guilt - Ram or lamb – atonement for unintentional sin requiring restitution Hebrews - Lesson 9

High Priest Duty on Yom Kippur
Verse 7 The first time he would carry the blood of a bull that had been sacrificed for him and his family Then the blood of the goat for the sins of the people. The high priest would lay his hands on the another goat and confess the sins of the nation over that goat. Then the goat would be driven out of the camp to symbolize the departure of sin from the camp of Israel. (Scapegoat) Hebrews - Lesson 9

Back to Verse 8 “The way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed” This can be translated MANY different ways One commentator wrote… “you will never know the fullness and freedom of life in Christ if you are still going to the tabernacle to fix yourself. Until you understand that you have nothing of value to offer God, you will never get My grace and mercy” Hebrews - Lesson 9

Broken & Contrite ♥ Psalm 51:16 For you do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. Read Isaiah 29:13 (quoted by Jesus in Matt 15:8-9) We can sacrifice all that we want and we can obey all the regulations that we want, but in the end if our heart isn't changed, then we're no better off. Read Hebrews 9:11-14 What was the REAL achievement? Access to God, the very thing lacking under the old covenant. Christ's entered into the heavenly sanctuary with his own blood. The sacrifice that accomplished eternal redemption!!!!!!!!! Hebrews - Lesson 9

One Present Day Scenario
Laying in bed at night your conscience/thoughts start gnawing at you You didn’t pray well today, you struggled with this, you can do so much better, you tend to be lazy, you did this, you didn’t do that, God can’t be pleased with me. That’s when you thank God for Jesus! When you become overwhelmed by the fact that Christ loves you as a dirty sinner, it’s the kindness that leads to true repentance And the conscience is cleaned Hebrews - Lesson 9

Summary Vs 14 …cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? “Serve” can also be translated worship. The blood of Christ purifies our conscience from dead works - the active violation of the will of God. Read 1 John 1:7 Hebrews - Lesson 9

Open the Way to God It is the kindness of Christ and the overwhelming gratitude that brings us to repentance. The atoning death of Christ gives us right relationship with God; it also provides the purification that enables authentic relationship with God. Hebrews - Lesson 9
