SPORTS PARTICIPATION PYRAMID The very bottom point of our triangle represents where individuals first come into sport.Discussion What factors may limit the amount of people coming into sport…? Why is a triangle shape used? What does it represent??

Elite level – highly skilled, excellence, national and international representation. Not necessarily professional Participation level – choice, competency, various reasons (PMS), development of skills Performance level – training, commitment, improvement of skills, coaching, possibly perform at club or regional level Foundation level – limited understanding, basic skills/movements, PE lessons CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH STAGE

EXAM QUESTIONS! On the worksheet provided complete the exam questions Make sure you look at how many marks the question is worth! You must raise this many points by DESCRIBING or EXPLAINING Mark your partners exam questions… Are there enough points raised?? Are they relevant points?? Are they repeating information Do they use good examples?

MARK SCHEME… Explain two factors that may influence an individual’s participation in sport or exercise Credit any two of the following: Culture, Health and well- being, Image, Resources, People or Socio-economic. Two marks for appropiate explanation, e.g. Culture can influence participation by gender. For example, boys are less likely to take part in dance as it is deemed a female sport. An individual has played at international level. Which level of the sports participation pyramid have they reached? Elite

An individual plays competitively on a regular basis and receives regular coaching to develop his skills. The individual has played at regional level. Which level of the sports participation pyramid have they reached? Performance An Olympic athlete would be performing at the Elite stage of the participation pyramid. Explain the other three stages using practical examples. Performance level – training, commitment, improvement of skills, coaching, possibly perform at club or regional level Participation level – choice, competency, various reasons (PMS), development of skills Foundation level – limited understanding, basic skills/movements, PE lessons

HOMEWORK 1. Log into My PE Exam.org with your username and password. Watch the video on Healthy Active Lifestyles, make notes and do the quiz. 2. Initiatives in sport Research: Youth Sports Trust and Sport England Produce an A4 poster with images of their logo and: For each: i) Who are they? ii) Who is their main focus on? iii) What are their aims?
