2013 UMC Survey The survey has been ported from Ga. Tech. (thanks, Naresh!), edited and reorganized to reflect how the data are reported back. The revised survey has been transmitted to MRS, who will web host, collect and aggregate data. The survey should open in the next several weeks to be due by Jan. 31, 2013. Survey results should appear on or about April 1, 2013 in Powerpoint format to the survey respondents.

Proposed revisions to the ABET Materials Program Criteria by the TMS Accreditation Committee Summary of the revisions: 1. Biology and biological were been added as examples. 2. “computational techniques” was mentioned at the beginning of the Curriculum paragraph along with advanced science and engineering principles. Also, the last sentence was modified to associate “consistent with the program educational objectives” with selection and design rather than methods. 3. The introductory sentence was revised so that the first refers to general materials criteria, while the second identifies specific names associated with materials/metallurgical vs. ceramics criteria. The first two items were in response to input from this committee. The third was identified during the revision process as needing clarification.

Professional Registration PAKS-UMC input requested. The next PAKS (Professional Activities and Knowledge Study) for the MET/MAT Professional Engineer exam will take place in 2013. Every six to eight years the exam is refreshed by asking PEs in the field to review the specifications of the exam to be sure the exam is relevant to the practice. A survey is used in this process. The last was completed in February of 2007 and resulted in an anchor exam for the October 2008 administration. The process will begin in 2013 with the survey creation at the TMS annual meeting. Other societies can be identified and asked to participate in the survey. Although survey takers are required to have a PE license, the NCEES has rules that allow some non-PE involvement. If anyone from the UMC is interested in taking the survey, please let Mary Samsa, TMS, know (msamsa@tms.org).

TMS Education Committee: computational tools in materials education. TMS has an Education Committee with a focus on undergraduate and graduate materials engineering education. The ICME Committee also has a Subcommittee on Education. Are there areas the UMC can identify where assistance from TMS in regard to teaching computational tools would be helpful? Identifying software and/or vendors who have education versions, case studies, best practices, etc. Please provide any feedback.

MGI + 1.5: Impacts of the MGI on the academic materials community 1.5 years later. Perspective from the center (Dr. Ashley White, AAAS S&T Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation) How are programs responding to the MGI (presenters from the UMC membership)? Discussion and identification of high points for summary letter to OSTP.
