3. ALGEBRA READINESS “Adding Rational Numbers” (5-1) How do you add fractions with unlike denominators? To add fractions with unlike denominators (different-sized parts), change the fractions to equivalent fractions with the same denominators (same-sized parts). Then, add the numerators (number of parts). The denominators stay the same. w  Write equivalent fractions with  a common denominator (notice each fraction is multiplied by the other fraction’s denominator)  Add the numerators. 
