ALGEBRA READINESS LESSON 4-4 Warm Up

ALGEBRA READINESS “Adding Rational Numbers” (5-1) How do you add fractions with unlike denominators? To add fractions with unlike denominators (different-sized parts), change the fractions to equivalent fractions with the same denominators (same-sized parts). Then, add the numerators (number of parts). The denominators stay the same. w  Write equivalent fractions with  a common denominator (notice each fraction is multiplied by the other fraction’s denominator)  Add the numerators. 

ALGEBRA READINESS “Adding Rational Numbers” (5-1) To change a mixed number into its decimal form: 1. change the fraction to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator and add the whole number to the decimal form of the fraction, or 2. make the mixed number an improper fraction and divide the numerator by the denominator Example: To add decimals, line up the decimals. This will ensure that you’re adding the same place values. Example: Add 12.34 + 432.1 + 3.456 1. Line up the decimals 2. Place the numbers where they go in relation to the decimal 3. Add zero to blank spaces. How do you change a mixed number into a decimal? How do you add decimals?. _______._______. 12.34 432.1 ______ 3.456___. 12.340 432.100 ______ 3.456___. 12.340 432.100 ______ 3.456___ 447.896

ALGEBRA READINESS Find – +. 1212 1313 3636 1212 1 3 2 3 + = = + 1616 Add the numerators. 2626 1313 1 2 3 2 – = = – Multiply to find a common denominator. Adding Rational Numbers LESSON 5-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS A recipe calls for cup of white flour and cup of wheat flour. How many cups of flour do you need? 1313 3434 4 12 1313 1 4 3 4 = = The LCD is 12. Write the fractions with the same denominator. 9 12 3434 3 4 3 13 12 Add the numerators. + = = + You need, or 1, cups of flour. 13 12 1 12 Adding Rational Numbers LESSON 5-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS Find 6.75 + 8. 3 10 Write the mixed number as a decimal. 6.75 + 8 = 6.75 + 8.3 3 10 Add (Make sure you line up the decimals first). = 15.05 Adding Rational Numbers LESSON 5-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS Find each sum. 1. + 2. 3. 7.875 + 4 4. It snowed 2 in. on top of 4.5 in. of snow already on the ground. How deep is the snow now? 5858 1 12 5656 13 24 3838 – + 1212 17 24 1616 – 12 17 24 7 in. Adding Rational Numbers LESSON 5-1 Lesson Quiz
