Self Concept Make a list of five noun phrases that you would use to describe yourself.

3 Self-concept Our personal definition of ourselves… “Who am I?”
We define ourselves through social interaction Self-concept greatly influences the communication we have with others

Self concept = Our most fundamental possession The answer to “Who am I?” can grow and change Social roles Physical appearance Ways we act Ways we think

6 Labels are stable Our set of labels are relatively stable
Labels that are fundamental to who you are change very little What about you do you predict will be the say ten years from now?

7 labels that are subjective
A set of labels that are subjective Perception of experiences > v. < objective reality Your internal mirror reflects your perception of things others do or say

9 Reflected appraisal theory
How we think about ourselves is influenced by what we think other people think about us. The opinions that are most important to us are those from people we consider significant

Stop and think for a moment….???? So, do you LIKE all those people we consider significant? Are you glad they have an influence on you?

Our self concept is influenced by comparisons we make of ourselves with certain criteria that are valued in the environment (society) This perception tends to be distorted

High school students tend to have a smaller environment. Or do they? Think of the influence the media has on us.

15 Individual Selectivity Theory
We have control over the factors that influence our self-concept. We choose people whose voices and opinions we will value and consider significant.
