2 Introduction I would like to become a carpenter because: –I always enjoyed helping my Dad with projects around the house. –I am also very good with my hands. –It has always been a dream of mine –I enjoy the outdoors –I have always had the desire to own my own business

3 Career/Job - Investigate Some of the work carpenters do may surprise you. –They work not only with wood but also with steel and aluminum. –They can be involved in doing woodwork for different buildings, bridges and skyscrapers. –You can work in commercial, residential, or industrial construction. –You can also do renovations

4 Career/Job - Investigate Opportunity to start your own business and work for yourself. The working conditions could vary. –You could work inside in homes or on construction sites

6 Education To get into an apprenticeship/college you should to have: Grade 12 English Grade 12 Math Grade 11 Physics I would need to write a Certificate of Qualification exam. The course is Carpenter Apprenticeship Course Georgian College has the post secondary program Workshop

7 Post Secondary Institution Georgian College I will have to go to school for 2-3 years. The course is semestered. I will have to do 720 hours in the classroom and 7600 hours on the job. I will need my High School Diploma with grade 12 English as a minimum. Recommended: Science and Mathematics. Georgian College

8 Post Secondary Institution Georgian College I will be taking: Carpentry Fundamentals Applied Carpentry Fundamentals Advanced Framing Formwork and Framing Trim Carpentry Theory Trim Carpentry Applications CAD/Drafting Blueprint Reading Mathematics Techniques Carpentry at Georgian College

9 Costs The tuition for my program is $3,327/semester. The cost of books ranges from $500 to $2,000 per year. Residence is available to all students. It is an eight-story building with 2 bedroom suites. The suites have two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. The cost of residence is $5,652 per year. Typical Suite

11 Costs - continued There is a meal plan, which costs $650 per semester. Off campus living starts at approximately $400 to 600 per month for just the accommodation. Miscellaneous expenses would be at least another $400 per month. Sample Menu – Food Plan

12 Conclusion This project has helped me to determine what I require to become a carpenter I have gone to the Open House at Georgian College and I can’t wait to go there. The only thing that surprised me was how expensive it is to live in residence or even off campus. Questions?
