3 Where Do I Start? 1.Take a career interest inventory. 2.Research careers. 3.Determine what aspect of your matching career field matches your abilities and work ethic. 4.Research colleges with appropriate majors, if applicable. 5.Apply!

4 Options Include Technical college Two-year college Four-year university Military Work Doing nothing

5 Admission to Technical College Fill out application Have guidance office send a transcript Schedule a time with the college to take their placement test (ASSET, COMPASS) Decide on a major—It will usually take effect immediately!

6 Admission to 2-Year College The SAT or ACT can be required for admission and placement. Fill out an application. Have the guidance office send a transcript. Schedule a time with the college to take a placement test. Decide on your major. If you plan to continue to a university, choose a major that corresponds to your 4-year major.

7 Admission to a Four-Year University Take the SAT or ACT…at least twice! Without a college preparatory seal or adequate SAT scores, you may be required to take remedial courses or begin with an Associate’s degree. Fill out an application. Have the guidance office send a transcript of your grades.

8 Military Entrance Take the ASVAB, either at school or at a recruitment office. Contact a recruiter of the branch that interests you. He or she will do the rest!

9 Going to Work Immediately? Be aware that without some post- secondary education or training, the job will most likely include one or more of these: –Low pay –Bad hours –Manual labor

11 And if you do nothing? How will you provide for your family? How will you eat and feed your children? How will you pay taxes and become a productive member of society? How will you avoid depression and feel good about yourself? How will you refrain from risky behaviors (drugs, alcohol, etc.)?

12 A Little Advice… Decide where you see yourself five or ten years from now. –W–What (if any) education will it take for you to live the life you want? –W–What do you need to do to get that education? Decide what is realistic for you. –D–Do you struggle with academic classes? –A–Are you willing to work hard enough to compensate?
